Nicholas Harvey MA, MB, BChir, PhD, FRCP is Professor of Rheumatology and Clinical Epidemiology at the MRC Lifecourse Epidemiology Unit, University of Southampton, having originally trained in medicine at the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge. He is Chair of the International Osteoporosis Foundation Committee of Scientific Advisors, a Clinical Trustee of the UK Royal Osteoporosis Society (ROS) and Vice-Chair of the ROS Osteoporosis and Bone Research Academy. He leads an MRC programme focused on the lifecourse epidemiology of bone and joint disease. His work thus incorporates a lifecourse approach to characterisation of the epidemiology and determinants of osteoporotic fracture from cradle to grave, elucidation of underlying mechanisms, and development of novel interventions. He has won many national/international prizes, such as the National Osteoporosis Society Kohn Award and International Osteoporosis Foundation Medal of Achievement. He is an investigator on >£50m grant funding and has published over 225 peer-reviewed papers. He serves the UK and global field as a member of the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research Professional Practice Committee, the UK National Osteoporosis Guideline Group Advisory Committee, Royal Osteoporosis Society (UK) Scientific Programme Committee, Bone Research Society (UK) Committee (2014-2018), UK Biobank Imaging Working Group (leading the DXA assessment of 100,000 individuals), Versus Arthritis Progress Review Committee and NIHR Research for Patient Benefit Regional Advisory Board (2016-2019). He serves as an associate editor for Archives of Public Health and Aging Clinical and Experimental Research, and on the editorial boards of Bone and Osteoporosis International.
